On January 14th, Vancouver’s CKNW Radio interviewed GSL Director Steven Hoffman to discuss the international legal challenges faced by Canada in the quest to legalize cannabis. The interview built upon Hoffman’s previous work on Canada’s international barriers to cannabis legalization, namely discussing the possibility of withdrawal from the UN treaties that current plans would contravene. Discussing the consequences for withdrawal and re-entry post-legalization, Hoffman noted: “[Canada] would lose 1 vote out of 190 [voting countries of the UN], but I think what [Canada] would gain is being recognized as a principled objector to an old, outdated approach to drugs that’s actually caused a lot of harm, put a lot of people who need medical assistance to jail, and cost an enormous amount of money that has mostly been wasted.” Listen to Hoffman’s interview on the CKNW Audio Vault here (at the 07:10 mark for the 7am January 14th session).
