Pharmacare Panel

On February 7th, GSL Associate Director Patrick Fafard spoke on a panel titled “The Politics of Pharmacare and Health Insurance Reform Lessons from Canada and the U.S.,” hosted by the University of Ottawa Centre for Health Law, Policy and Ethics. He discussed the critical importance of political leadership in implementing pharmacare in Canada, as well as some of the challenges involved. Notable challenges he discussed include the weak intergovernmental machinery that may impede negotiations between provinces, as well as the fact that several provinces are currently in debt and face structural budgetary shortfalls that will make it very difficult to share the costs of a pharmacare program with the Government of Canada.
