On November 24, GSL Director Steven Hoffman was interviewed by CTV News on the dangers of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and how to fight it. In the interview Hoffman highlighted that over a quarter of all infections in Canada are already resistant to first-line treatment and that inaction would only exacerbate the situation.
To combat the progression of AMR Steven Hoffman laid out a three-step plan that governments can start enacting now:
1. Access to antibiotics for people in low- and middle-income countries where AMR is costing countless lives everyday
2. Conservation of our existing antibiotics. They are a precious resource whose efficacy drops with every unnecessary use.
3. Innovation to create new antibiotics or alternatives that would reduce our need for antibiotics.
