Today, GSL Director Steven Hoffman released an article in CIGI Online reiterating that while Canada remains signatory to three UN Drug Control Treaties, the Liberal's plan to legalize cannabis directly contravenes current international legal obligations. In the article, titled "Canada should not legalize cannabis until it withdraws from the UN Drug Control Treaties," Hoffman argues that "violating these problematic treaties might seem morally defensible but would be illegal and would undermine Canada’s long-standing commitment to a rules-based world order." However, Canada does have a few options to legalize cannabis without breaking international law. Read these options and more here.
